           2048 – Az ke-Holmim – We Are as Dreamers

The following is a translation of an article by Nadia Matar that
appeared in the Yom Ha’atzmaut edition of the Mekor Rishon newspaper.
Nadia, among many others, was asked to write an article on Israel in
another fifty years.

From Rebirth to Revival

Nadia Matar: born in 1966 in Belgium. Immigrated to Israel in 1987
from Belgium. Born into a secular, traditional, and Zionist family,
and was active in a Zionist youth movement in Belgium. In Jerusalem
she met her husband David, a pediatrician from the US. They have lived
in Efrat from ’89, have four children, and the fifth is on the way.
On Jerusalem Day of 1993, together with her mother-in-law Ruth Matar,
they founded Women in Green, a popular women’s movement for Israel.
She has a program on Arutz 7 [on which this was also broadcast], and
on the Jewish radio in London, “Jewish Spectrum.”

The next fifty years will be defined as the transition from rebirth to
revival, to a return to Judaism and Zionism. It all began at the end
of the twentieth century, exactly 50 years ago. Events in the wake of
which Shimon Peres was sent to prison, Arafat was executed, and a
civil war erupted among the Arabs

In a few minutes the centenary celebrations will begin with the
central performance on a huge three-dimensional screen which was
erected on the Abu Sneina hills in Hebron. Tens of thousands of
Hebron Jews receive the hundreds of thousands of Jews who are coming
to participate in the centenary celebrations with them. This
wonderful sight fills me with emotion. A while ago I turned 82, and
it is a great honor to be present at the centenary celebrations of
the State of Israel – and even more so in Hebron, the city of the
Patriarchs, the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I
look around me and am amazed, as always, by the beauty of the place.
Wherever you look, you see the houses of Jews who have come here to
live over the course of years. I look around me and I remember…. I
remember the events that occurred in the past fifty years – events
that led to such a drastic change in our lives here in the State of
Israel. If the first 50 years of the State were defined as the
transition from Holocaust to rebirth [tekumah], then the current
fifty years will be defined as the transition from rebirth to
revival, to a return to Judaism and Zionism. It all began at the end
of the twentieth century, exactly 50 years ago. The deliberations
about the second withdrawal were at an advanced stage, and for a
moment it seemed that the Prime Minister would cave in to
international pressures, but then there was another murder of a Jew
by Arab rioters, who, as usual, fled to the autonomous areas. The public
in Israel could no longer restrain themselves in the face of this
bloodshed. Tens of thousands of Jews from throughout the country took
part in spontaneous demonstrations, with the demand to stop Oslo –
now! The public pressure was tremendous, and it helped.

On Yom Ha’atzmaut 1998 Binyamin Netanyahu delivered his historic
speech, in which he proclaimed that the Oslo accords had failed, and
that we could not continue to implement them. Not only did these
accords not bring peace, to the contrary – they created an Arab
monster that slowly took control of all our land, with the clear
intent of destroying us. “After 2,000 years of Exile and a terrible
Holocaust, the Jewish people returned to its land and its freedom,”
Netanyahu declared, “this land belongs to the Jewish people for all
eternity, and we shall no longer abandon even a single additional
centimeter of our homeland to strangers.”

This proclamation surprised and confused the PLO Authority, which was
in the preparatory stages for a war with Israel, but planned to attack
only after receiving a large contiguous territory, and then it would
declare its independence in May 1999.

Arafat did not know how to respond.

A large delegation of leaders from the left headed by Shimon Peres
came to his assistance, and advised him to formally unify with the
Israeli Arabs, and to respond forcefully and violently. “Only terror
can save the peace!” Peres and the people from Peace Now cried out.

The Arabs listened to their advisors in the Israeli left, and acted
accordingly: a car bomb exploded in the center of Israel and
miraculously harmed “only” a few Israelis.

The Israeli government declared that it would not tolerate any terror
 against its citizens.

Yasser Arafat was arrested, convicted of crimes against the Jewish
 people, and executed.

Shimon Peres was convicted of collaboration with the enemy and was
 sentenced to life imprisonment.

The leftist camp shrank over time, until it was decided to establish
a museum to memorialize the teachings of the post-Zionist left, in
order to educate the young generation not to repeat the bitter
 mistakes of this messianic sect.

Within the Arab public, a civil war broke out in the struggle for
leadership. Thousands of Arabs were murdered by their brethren. The
situation deteriorated so greatly that the majority of Israeli Arabs
and the Arabs of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza left, migrating to other
 Arab countries.

A dramatic development occurred concurrently in the United States. A
wave of pogroms against Jewish communities swept the country after
the assassination of the black leader Louis Farrakhan by misfits.
Most of the Jews of the United States fled to Australia, but several
hundred thousand Jews, most of them religious, came to Israel and
aided in the development of the land.

Dozens of new settlements sprang up throughout Judea, Samaria, and
Gaza, Galilee, the Golan, and the Negev.

The quiet demographic revolution, which had already begun in the late
’90s, accelerated, and the leadership of the State quickly passed into
the hands of the religious-traditional-national public. This happened
in the army, the media, culture, the courts, etc….The Jewish
people chose believing leaders to be President and Prime Minister of
 the State of Israel.

The Women in Green movement initiated a tremendous campaign with the
slogan” “Women and Mothers for Jewish Labor.” The sticker they
distributed read: “I am proud of my son the builder.”

Thanks to the campaign, Jewish mothers finally agreed to send their
children to types of work which until then had been considered
“dirty”: construction, street cleaning, agriculture, etc. The economy
blossomed and unemployment vanished. The State of Israel flourished.

The ringing of the telephone awakened me from my dream.
 The time is 17:00, today, Sunday, 30 Nissan 5758, April 26, 1998.
“Wake up, Nadia,” my friend says, “we have to get ready for the
demonstration tonight across from the Prime Minister’s Office – a
demonstration against the continuation of the withdrawals.”

Jerusalem, May 8, 1998

            Machiavelli is Alive and Well!

The sudden announcement by Ronnie Milo, the Mayor of Tel
Aviv, that he will not be a mayoralty candidate in Tel
Aviv, but instead will be a candidate for Prime Minister
in the elections some two years away, at first blush
seems to be a potentially explosive item of news.  In a
troubled Oslo era, where failure of that process is
apparent, and solutions are desperately awaited by an
anxious public, a “new” candidate for Prime Minister
with an innovative approach would be a significant and
provocative move.  But Lo and Behold, Milo doesn’t even
address himself to that major problem.  Nor does he
attempt to conceal the purpose of his move behind
flowery nationalistic ideals. Instead he unjustly
attacks the Haredi Community as the reason for his move.
For him it is the last straw that the arrogant Bat Sheva
Dance Group was not permitted to perform its striptease
from Chasidic garb to naked skin.  Somehow, he would
have us believe that he gave up running for the
mayoralty of Tel Aviv, and was moving on to the
national scene, because his views on freedom of
“art” expression were put in jeopardy by the censorship
of the Jewish religious community.

Can anyone seriously believe that this was the real
reason which compelled him to throw his hat into the
ring?  Nor is there any basis to believe that it was
because Barak, as head of the Labor Party, went back on
his agreement with Milo, and suddenly decided to field a
Labor candidate.  Everyone concedes that while not a
“great” mayor, Milo was a shoo-in for winning another
term, with or without Barak or Labor’s support.

It all boils down to the plain and simple “back room”
deal which the Elders of the Labor Party concocted with
Milo to bring Netanyahu down.  If Milo ran, and drew
the Likud secular vote to himself, that would do the
trick, if the figures of the last election were any
guide.  Milo had shown his popularity with the Likud
secularists as Mayor of that secular-oriented city.
Attacking the Haredi “element” fit beautifully into the
game plan, as it would bolster his image with the
“seculars” among the Likud, of whom there seems to be a
sufficient number to whet the Labor thirst for a return
to power.  The narrowness of the Netanyahu margin of
victory made Milo the logical candidate that Labor
needed in the forthcoming election, to draw away
desperately needed votes from Netanyahu.  At the very
least it would cause a run-off between Barak and
Netanyahu. Of course, after such run-off Milo will ask
all those who voted for him, to vote now for Barak
instead.

And the price Labor is prepared to pay?  That will
only be revealed by what the future holds in store
for Ronnie Milo.

                      Incitement to Murder

The following is the literal translation of Sunday’s program by Nadia Matar,
the chairperson of Women for Israel’s Tomorrow (Women in Green), on Arutz
7. Nadia speaks every Sunday after the 12:00 noon newscast.

Shalom to all our listeners!
This is Nadia Matar speaking –

I read the Shabbat newspapers, and what can I tell you? It’s simply
unbelievable. I would have expected that on the eve of the Prime
Minister’s trip – or, with God’s help, his not going – to the United
States, most of the articles would focus on the subject of
“withdrawals,” and a few articles on the subject did appear, but most
of the articles still were occupied with the Jubilee Bells and the
 Batsheva Dance Company incident.

After reading the articles, only a single conclusion can be reached:
the secular left is enveloped in depression, mourning, fear, and
complete panic. They have only one message: the religious have taken
 the state away from us.

That a Jew was stabbed to death in the heart of Jerusalem? Who cares?
That the archmurderer Arafat is liable to receive the entire
mountain ridge running through Judea and Samaria], and dozens of
settlements will become isolated islands in a sea of Arab terror –
so what? This is unimportant compared to the true tragedy, in the
eyes of the left, that they presumably were not allowed to debase
the Jewish religion, before the United States Vice-President Al
Gore and tens of millions of television viewers throughout the world –
and all this, of course, under the guise of freedom of expression and art.

But is this what the secular left is really mourning over? That the
Batsheva company did not perform? No, my listeners! This is obviously
much deeper, and they only made cynical political use of the Batsheva
incident, in order to express their true anger at the fact that they
are no longer in power, and that now the national camp governs. For
we all know that there was no censorship here, or religious coercion.
This dance company has already been appearing with this contemptible
dance from ’92, and no one has bothered them – so what? Eliakim
Haetzni stated this well in Mekor Rishon. I quote: “The Israeli left,
if it could, would turn to mourning every day of rule by the ‘aliens’
 – those national-religious who stole for themselves ‘their’ country.”

In the demonstration by the left yesterday in Malkhei Yisrael Square,
they stated this, black on white: the demonstration is not against
religion, but rather against the religious who are taking control of
 our lives.

Their panic ensues from the fact that they are slowly, slowly
becoming aware that it will be very difficult for them to change
matters. Slowly, slowly, their eyes are being opened, and they
understand that there is here what I like to define as a quiet
demographic revolution, and that the traditional-religious-national
camp, that they so hate – will become the majority in a few years and
take most posts in the army, the media, culture, and so forth … and
 this simply drives them mad.

Amnon Rubinstein, the former Education Minister, writes in “Ha’aretz”
an article entitled “The Secular Hourglass,” in which he cites
statistics indicating that in 25 years the secular Jewish part [of
the population] will slowly become a minority, “which causes the
gloominess accompanying us in this jubilee year,” Rubinstein writes.
He ends his article with the question: “Is this the country that has
been decreed for us? Are we capable of tipping the scales?”

The answer to this question is provided by Yehonatan Gefen in his
article in the “Maariv Sofshavua” magazine this Shabbat. My listeners,
I am going to file a complaint with the police for incitement to
murder for what he writes there. Listen to what he writes, and I
quote: “They stole the state from me. On the last Independence [Day]
holiday at least half the people were left without a holiday and
without independence. We will not celebrate and we will not be
independent until we liberate the country from the rule of religion.
Israel is the occupied territories of the police of the religious
parties. If the secular want to continue living here, they have no
choice but to begin an intifada. Yes, I am ready to throw the first
 rock.” End of quote.

Now, my listeners, we all know that the meaning of intifada is the
murder of Jews, the throwing of rocks and Molotov cocktails in order
to kill. Not only is Yehonatan Gefen imparting legitimacy to the
intifada of the Arabs and their murder of Jews, he himself calls for
the murder of religious Jews by his willingness to throw the first
rock. I do not intend to file a complaint only against him, but also
against the “Maariv” newspaper that permitted the publication of this
horror. Even though, unfortunately, I do not anticipate that much
will happen with my complaint, since it is well-known that the police
and the State Attorney’s Office are busy persecuting the Jews of
Hebron, Master of the Universe! we cannot be silent. There is a small
group of people here who belong to the extreme left, and they feel
that they can attack and humiliate the entire national camp, and even
incite to violence against it. This is happening in the state media,
on the radio, television, in the press, in calling government
ministers “Dirty Jew” – and no one opens his mouth in our camp!

Despite all the statistics showing that the “Yehonatan Gefens” are a
small minority in Israel, without roots among the people, we act as
the persecuted ones, only because they control the media.

So, my listeners, let’s end these feelings of inferiority!
We have nothing to fear, or of which to be ashamed, or for which to
 justify ourselves. We did not murder Jesus; we did not murder Rabin;
and – what can we do? – we won the elections in a democratic fashion,
and we will continue to win in the future. The anti-Jewish left will
have to accept this fact, and to understand that it represents a
small minority, as opposed to the majority of the Jewish people that
remains loyal to the people of Israel, the Torah of Israel, and the
 Land of Israel.

 Have a good week.

             How The Mighty Have Fallen

We are in the midst of the celebration of the
50th year of the recreation of the State of Israel, a
true miracle that has occurred within our lifetime.  A
virtual barren wasteland has been transformed by the
Jewish People, which suffered the loss of a major
portion of its numbers only a generation or so ago.  A
People which endured a Holocaust, somehow managed to
return to its Promised Land.  They came back, despite
the hostility of the British Mandate overseer, which
had been appointed by the League of Nations to
facilitate a Jewish return to its entire homeland.  The
Jews made their deserts flower again, notwithstanding
hatred by  the Arabs, who continuously waged war
against them.
The attainments under such adverse conditions of
this unique People should be awe-inspiring, and fill
its youth with a deserved feeling of accomplishment.
Moreover, it should have instilled in this youth a
natural sense of pride in their People; a love of the
Heritage that preserved them throughout the ages in the
most hostile circumstances possible; and it should have
given this youth an inextinguishable burning love of
their ancient Biblical homeland, where their
illustrious forefathers are buried in Hebron and
elsewhere throughout the Land.
Amazingly, however, the situation in Israel
today does not capture that mood at all.  We have a
country which formerly had been tightly controlled by a
Socialist-Communist-Bolshevik orientation, which was
anti-religious, adhering faithfully to the Marx dictate
that religion, including Judaism, was an opiate of the
people.  As a result, the Labor governments, and even
their kibbutz segments, raised a youth barren of
knowledge of their Jewish Religion, Heritage and
History.  They raised a generation of Hebrew-speaking
gentiles, who had nothing in common with Jews who lived
in the diaspora; the only bond remaining between them
was a negative one, the anti-Semitism they both
continued to face;  by the way, today, the Arabs are
the world’s greatest conveyor of this disease.
Instead of emphasizing our many positive
achievements and enjoying the celebration of their 50th
Jubilee, the Israeli media and newspapers are full of
divisive attacks on religious segments of the
population.  Instead of celebrating the impressive
growth of Torah institutions in our land, and
furthering an awareness of our Biblical roots and
historical ties to this Land, the media is pre-
occupied with a transsexual winning a song contest;
they are blind, and refuse to see the harm to Israel’s
ethical and moral image; they are simplistic, and
mistakenly believe the winning of this song contest by
Israel augurs its acceptance, and is an indication of
its approval by the “nations.”
How a mighty people can easily lose its way!
What is needed, is a return to its roots, which made
this People and Nation such a giant in its recent and
ancient past.

Dear Friends,

We have been informed that Michael Lerner (Tikkun Magazine) has asked people to call
the White House expressing support of Hilary Clinton’s statement for a PLO state.

We, who know the dangers to Israel inherent in such a state , must call the White
House and leave a message saying that “the American people do NOT support a PLO
state.”

The White House phone number is:  202-456-1111

Call Now!

                 Beilin’s True Colors

Yossi Beilin has denounced the Netanyahu
government’s acknowledgment that Jonathan Pollard was an
authorized Israeli agent.  He termed the move
“irresponsible” and evidence of the government’s chaotic
conduct of matters of state.  Beilin, and his fellow
Laborites, Rabin and Peres, had approved Pollard’s spy
mission, but when Pollard was discovered, disassociated
themselves from any responsibility in the matter,
adopting the strategy that Pollard was: “a volunteer in a
rogue operation.”
That is typical Beilin.  However, instead of
lying back and waiting for the damage to blow over from
the admission that the Peres-Beilin-Rabin previous
disclaimer had been an outright falsehood, Beilin decided
to attack Netanyahu “for being honest.”  Honesty,
loyalty, pride in one’s country, respect for the democratic
electoral process, all these have never been Beilin’s
forte.  The whole Oslo Process, of which Beilin and Peres
had been the chief architects and exponents, began and
continued in deception and lies to the Israeli public.
Moreover, its illegality in negotiating with the PLO at a
time when the law forbade such contacts, proved to be no
barrier for Beilin.  He and Peres considered themselves
above the law.  And they have been proven right so far!
They have never been prosecuted for the violations of the
law they committed in initiating Oslo. Their involvement
with Robin Cook, the British Foreign Minister, in the Har
Homa fiasco, is another example of their perfidy.
Continuing his disloyalty to Pollard, an
American Jew who provided Israel with vital information
concerning, among other things, Iraq’s nuclear
intentions, is not unusual for Beilin.  His record is
barren of any loyalty whatsoever to this Jewish state,
his Jewish heritage, pride in being Jewish, or any
nationalistic feeling for a Jewish homeland.  Rather, he
ridiculed Americans, whom he thought showed by their
actions a “Love of Country.”  Several years ago he wrote a
mean-spirited attack on Ronald Reagan(“Jerusalem Post,”
August 20, 1996).  In that article he depicted Reagan as
“pathetic” “shallow” and virtually a lovable old fool.
In effect, he called the American electorate naive,
empty, and childish for having elected Reagan in two
landslide victories. (In sharp contrast, Beilin and Peres
have never been directly elected by anyone.)
             Beilin  has no love or pride in his country;
he has no hesitation of immorally telling a falsehood to
win a point; he actively practices deceit with regard to
what he will disclose to the public, whose intelligence
he does not hold in high regard; these then are some of the
traits which characterize Beilin, Peres’ poodle.  Were he
half the man that former President Reagan was, he would
have long ago acknowledged Israel’s obligation to
Jonathan Pollard.  That he now attacks Netanyahu for
attempting to rectify the previous government’s sordid
behavior in the Pollard matter, is indeed revealing of
Beilin’s true colors!

Jerusalem, May 19, 1998

Is Arafat Someone You Can Trust?

A visitor from outer space coming upon the Israeli
scene today, would think he was in  Chelm, the land of
fools, instead of the independent State of Israel.  He
would have watched on television, heard on the radio,
and read in all of the newspapers how the Arab peace-
partner had encouraged Arabs to come out and march
against the celebration of Israel’s Jubilee Anniversary
of its re-creation.  He would have heard that the Arabs
were calling this day that Israel was re-created, “a
day of disaster” for the Arabs.  What makes the
situation even more ludicrous, is that while all this
display of Arab hostility is going on, the Prime
Minister of Israel is sitting in Washington attempting
to justify why he can only give over to Arafat less of
the Promised Land than Albright and Clinton are
demanding.
Our visitor would be amazed that Mr. Netanyahu
seemingly was oblivious of the hatred and disdain
towards Israel shown by the initiators of this march,
and of the ferociousness of the marchers themselves.
Their vicious throwing of stones and Molotov Cocktails
at Jews, brings to mind that only the presence of Israel
Army troops prevented a reoccurrence of the frequent
Arab pogroms that earlier occurred in the Land during
the British Mandate; then the Jews had to rely on the
inadequate protection of the British against such
violent Arab attacks.
What madness would ignore this obvious Arab
hostility and hatred?  Where is the precedent in all of
human history that successfully permitted the turning
over of part of a small country to a declared enemy?  Why
does Israel ignore Arafat’s continuous declarations in
Arabic to his people  where he specifically tells them
he will abandon any peace with Israel as soon as he
becomes strong enough to destroy Israel.  Why do Israel
and others ignore the announced PLO plan to obtain as
much land from Israel as it can in stages, and then move
to destroy Israel from that larger base, together with
the outside help of Iraq and Syria and our other peace
partners, Egypt and Jordan.
Is Shimon Peres’ analysis correct?  Peres advised
Netanyahu on CNN yesterday: ” If you don’t trust Arafat,
don’t give him another inch.  However, if you do, then
the 13% the U.S. is recommending is not worth arguing
about.”  Why does a visitor from outer space have no
difficulty seeing the hatred, and hostility of Arafat
towards Israel, and that there is no possible way that
Arafat will adhere to any peace agreement?  Why are
Peres, Beilin and yes, Netanyahu, willing to put Jewish
lives on the line in the face of Arab hostility, even
without the Arabs first being required to perform
specific acts such as “Amending the PLO Charter” which
repeatedly calls for the destruction of Israel.  What
actual proof exists that the Arabs are prepared to live
in peace with the State of Israel and the Jewish People?
Have we learned nothing from the recent Holocaust?  Why
can’t we firmly say “No” to the proposals of Clinton,
Albright and the Europeans that will lead to our self-
destruction?

Don’t Be King David, Don’t Be Zeev Jabotinsky
But – Master of the Universe! – Be Binyamin Netanyahu!

The following is the translation of Sunday’s program by Nadia
Matar, the chairperson of Women for Israel’s Tomorrow (Women in
Green), on Arutz 7. Nadia speaks every Sunday after the 12:00 noon
newscast.

Shalom to all our listeners!
This is Nadia Matar speaking –
We were informed this morning on the Kol Yisrael news that “there is
no breakthrough in the Prime Minister’s talks with the Americans.”
We, the national camp, presumably should be happy, because we all
know that the real meaning of this sentence is “there is still no
capitulation by the Prime Minister to the tremendous pressures by the
US,” but, unfortunately, I am not certain that our optimism will last
long. According to all the commentators, and especially the
commentators on whom we can rely, such as those from the “Ha-Tzofeh” and
“Mekor Rishon” newspapers, it transpires that the Prime Minister is
indeed prepared for a withdrawal of at least 11% from Judea and
Samaria, and the only thing delaying this is how to wrap the
merchandise in pretty wrapping paper, so that this sorry present will
be accepted by the Jewish people.

What can we add to what was already stated on Arutz 7 regarding the
dangers of the withdrawal? For, my dear listeners, you already know
that every kilometer that the Prime Minister will give now
constitutes not only the abandonment of Zionism, the abandonment of
our promised homeland to aliens, this is an active step toward the
establishment of the State of Palestine – this is the conscious
abandonment to the terrorists of dozens of settlements, sources of
water, and roads – and this sick idea by the United States of
“leasing” percentages of the area of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza is, as
the journalist Uri Dan says, “a mad idea that returns Israel to the
rule of the Mandate – this time American, and not British.”

To those from our camp who say that even if a withdrawal is
implemented, we cannot bring down the Prime Minister because “we have
no other alternative,” I say to them that this is not so! If the
withdrawal program is implemented, Heaven forbid, then there will be
no difference between the Netanyahu government and the Barak
government, and we must bring it down. The Prime Minister cannot
intimidate us! We did not put him in office so that he would continue
with the Oslo accords – and if this is his intention, then I prefer
even to being in the opposition … even though this is not the only
option, for our camp is blessed with qualified people who could
constitute an alternative to Binyamin Netanyahu.

But, my listeners, you already know all this….

Therefore I have chosen today, because 21 years ago today, on May 17,
1977, the “upheaval” took place and Menachem Begin, of blessed memory,
assumed power. I choose to end my words by reading several passages by
Professor Yisrael Eldad, of blessed memory, who addressed Menachem
Begin with an impassioned plea before the latter disappointed all of
us with the Camp David agreements, which, to our sorrow, have led us
to the sorry state of affairs in which we find ourselves today.
Professor Eldad’s words are so relevant, if only the Prime Minister
would take the time to listen:

An Open and Distressed Letter to Menachem Begin (from “Hegyonot
Yisrael”)
“I hope that you receive not only echoes of the political opposition
and security fears, but also the recurring waves of impassioned
amazement, of bitter disappointments, of betrayed loves, of crises of
faith in the heart. Although many of those close to you and the
veterans of the national movement who cannot find in their political
mind any justification for your actions, nevertheless exempt
themselves and silence themselves with the short answer: I rely upon
him, nevertheless one cannot but be receptive to the tremor in their
voice. These waves are not reported in the media, but a leader such
as you has to be receptive to them with the vessels of the heart.
Furthermore, I still hope that somewhere in an unoccupied corner of
your soul, you are even happy at the opposition that has arisen
against you, which is like an amplified resonance of the doubts in
your mind and the twinges of your conscience.[…]”

“You are not under compulsion. You are the one who wants to sign the
Government of Israel to a new White Paper, without festive attire or
disguises for the words: “self-rule” for the Arabs of Eretz Israel
means, in the not-so-distant final analysis: a clear White Paper, a
new division of western Eretz Israel! If this is not obvious to you,
Menachem Begin, then something has happened to your political
judgment, which was one of the keenest in Israel. And there is no
need for great ability to reconstruct the devastating political
address that you would have delivered, if such a proposal had been
 raised by the Alignment.”

“And also for the benefit of history: would it not have been
preferable for the Alignment to raise such a proposal, with your
formidable opposition? Was it for this that you were elected? You
drove the British out of the land, you drove the Alignment from
power, and now will you in effect drive out Zionism and the Jewish
people, and possibly settlers as well, from Judea, Samaria, and
 Sinai?”

“Levi Eshkol established a large state – and Menachem Begin is
destroying it, dwarfing it to its previous, not historical, not just,
dimensions.[…] Why are you doing this, Menachem Begin, to your
people and to yourself? ‘What happened?’ many good, wise, and loyal
 ones are asking?[…]”

“Either you are making a most serious, catastrophic mistake, or – or
we must rise up, and confess, saying: political Zionism in its
entirety erred: there is no importance to principles, to
declarations, there is importance to concrete action on the ground,
whenever and wherever this is possible. And so, they did much – but
we opposed this. We believed in mastery over territories that are not
in our hands, and we were thought to be madmen. And now?”

“Now we are doing a deed [maaseh] of which the ‘practical [Zionists –
ha-maasi’im]’ never conceived: to surrender – this is what this is in
practice – what we possess. Not to impose sovereignty over the parts
of Eretz Israel in our hands, not to settle the parts of Eretz Israel
in our hands with masses, to acknowledge the right of a minority over
parts of our land in our possession.[…]”

“I am heartbroken, Menachem Begin, and the hearts of many here are
broken. If only your physical heart will be strong enough to bear the
spiritual, the moral sorrow, and that it and you will have the
courage to recoil at the last minute from the abyss.[…]”

“Son of Zeev, reconsider, in this last hour.”

“[…] the Hasidic story is well-known. Rabbi Meir of Peremyshlyany
said: “They will never whip me in the World to Come for not being
Abraham. I was not Abraham. They will whip me for not being Meir.”
And so, you, Menachem Begin, are not deserving to be whipped for not
going forth to realize the Israelite kingdom according to the
territory promised to Abraham, or according to the territory of
David. Nor do you deserve lashes for not being Zeev Jabotinsky. You
are not Zeev Jabotinsky. But why are you not Menachem Begin? This is
the question that is being asked by the surprised and sorrowful many,
who have been so deeply wounded.”

And I turn to the Prime Minister, Mr. Binyamin Netanyahu: Don’t be
Abraham, don’t be King David, don’t be Zeev Jabotinsky…. But –
Master of the Universe! – be Binyamin Netanyahu, read your book, and
don’t give in to pressures, don’t surrender our homeland.

 Have a good week.

Jerusalem, May 24, 1998

Jerusalem Day is Eretz Yisrael Day

The following is the text of Sunday’s program by Nadia Matar, the
chairperson of Women for Israel’s Tomorrow (Women in Green), on Arutz
7. Nadia speaks every Sunday after the 12:00 noon newscast.

Shalom to all our listeners!
This is Nadia Matar speaking –

I want to share with you two thoughts that pass through my mind on
this special day. The first thought is concerned with the sentence
that is so prevalent among our politicians, namely, “Unified
Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish People,” or the
sentence “We will never divide Jerusalem.” The question is, Is
Jerusalem really unified – and what does “unified Jerusalem” mean?

Leftists will tell you that Jerusalem is not unified, and that there
are many quarters in which no Jewish foot treads. They therefore
conclude that we must divide Jerusalem, Heaven forbid, and allow the
Arabs to establish their capital in East Jerusalem, in the Arab areas
of the city, according to their definition.

These claims do not withstand the test of reality. For in what is
called “East Jerusalem,” in the areas we liberated 31 years ago, we
established East Talpiot, Gilo, Ramot, Pisgat Ze’ev. Neveh Yaakov,
French Hill, Ramat Eshkol, the Jewish Quarter, and the beginnings of
large Jewish neighborhoods in the areas that were turned into Arab
areas under the Jordanian occupation between ’48 and ’67, such as
Beit Orot, the City of David, the Jewish houses in the Old City, in
the quarter that is called the Muslim Quarter or the Christian
Quarter, Ma’aleh Har ha-Zeitim [the ascent of the Mount of Olives],
 and others….

So, my listeners, this is the simple answer to the question: the more
Jews who build and live in all parts of Jerusalem, the more Jerusalem
will be whole and unified. What makes Jerusalem unified is Jewish
construction and settlement everywhere. If it is not sufficiently
unified, this means that there is not enough Jewish construction and
settlement in all these areas, and we must correct this situation.

The struggle for Jerusalem today is not a struggle of declarations,
but rather a struggle of construction and settlement on the ground.
The Arabs, quietly, quietly, are building illegally day and night,
and are attempting to create territorial continuity in Jerusalem
between Ramallah in the north and Bethlehem in the south. Therefore
they oppose Jewish construction on Har Homah, because this area
destroys their continuity. But Har Homah is only a small example.
Jerusalem will truly be unified when there will be Jewish prayer on
the Temple Mount, with masses of Jews ascending there. Jerusalem will
truly be whole and unified when masses of Jews will walk about in the
streets of the Old City. Jerusalem will truly be unified when all
Israel will be united in its rejoicing and celebrate this day as an
 official and national holiday.

This brings me to the second thought, regarding the very name of this
day. We call it “Jerusalem Day,” but, my listeners, this day is not
just Jerusalem Day, this day is Hebron Day, Judea Day, Samaria Day,
Gaza Day, Golan Day. I don’t know who chose the name “Jerusalem Day,”
but, in my opinion, this diminishes the miracle that occurred 31
years ago, and in fact conceals the fact that on this day we did not
only return to Jerusalem, we also liberated the entire heart of the
land, we returned to our holy places, we returned to the places to
which we prayed during the course of so many years.

This day should have acquired a status more important than
Independence Day, because this day completes Independence Day.

Unfortunately, however, as is well-known, the politicians, and yes,
even those politicians with a kipah on their heads, did not relate to
this miracle as they should have, and in fact, to this day, they
relate to the areas of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza as real estate areas
as a bargaining chip — as something that can be divided – given –
handed over in percentages (with “more pain,” or “less heartache”).

So, my listeners, the time has come to stop this information line and
to return to the sources. To say that what is correct for Jerusalem
is correct for all of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza as well. Not only
Jerusalem has been promised to us by the Holy One, blessed be He, but
all of this land, and we may not surrender it.

“And the Lord said to Avram, ‘Raise your eyes and look out from where
you are, to the north and south, to the east and west, for I give all
the land that you see to you and your offspring forever….Arise,
walk about the land, through its length and its breadth, for I give
 it to you'” (Genesis 13).

We will guard our land and thus we will bring peace [shalom] –
wholeness [sheleimut] – when we will build in it, when we will walk
about in it, when we will spread out to the west and to the east, to
the north and to the south.

Jerusalem Day is Eretz Yisrael Day.

It is the day in which the Jewish People says to the world that this
entire land was given to us, and only to us, and we will not
 surrender it.

Have a good week, happy Jerusalem Day, and happy Eretz Yisrael Day!

And let us not forget, “What have we done today for the release of
 Jonathan Pollard?”

Jerusalem, May 27, 1998

              The False Bait of “Peace”

Why is it that although we have been in Israel many
years, we continue to be shocked about the naive and
almost indifferent reaction of some Jews here to events
which seriously affect their lives.  Take for instance,
the hatred of Jews and Israel, that Arafat, and the PLO
are teaching the children in their schools, in their
Media and in their homes.  That serious problem is swept
under the rug by our own Media.  It just is not a
“proper” subject for discussion, since those in control
of the Jewish Media think that such an airing will
adversely affect the “peace process.”  Nevertheless, no
matter what the political or religious orientation of
any Jew, the fact is that the possibility of Jews living
in peace in this Land  is seriously and explosively
affected by such hateful teachings to young Arabs.
The facile explanation for ignoring this
obviously bad situation is that there does not seem to
be a ready solution to this serious problem.  The Jews
have returned to their ancestral home and made a
neglected Land bloom again.  This improved economic
situation, apparently attracted many Arabs from
surrounding countries to migrate here.  Unfortunately
the improved economic conditions of these Arabs was not
accompanied by gratitude to the Jews.  Such Arabs
actively and irreconcilably resist living in the
historic revival of a Jewish State.  They have a long
history of showing their antagonism through various acts
of terror. Their leaders encourage them, calling such
violence, acts of heroism and martyrdom.
To make matters worse, in addition to the
problem caused by the presence of hostile Arabs within
their midst, the Jewish Community is seriously divided
among itself.  A small, but powerful minority of mostly
“Hellenistic” secular Jews, are tired of fighting Arab-
initiated wars. They are being myopic in seeking to
resolve the conflict in a one-sided manner.
Despite the loss of the Premiership to a large
Jewish majority, the Labor minority whose tentacles
still control the Israel Media, Army, Police and the
Courts, have virtually abandoned their roots in Judaism
and their Jewish Heritage.  Thus they have no restraints
from Jewish nationalistic or religious feelings, or
their historical and Biblical ties to this Promised
Land, in their quest for “peace” with the Arabs at all
costs.  Their overriding consideration of “peace at any
cost,” blinds them to the hard realities of Arab deceit.
Mankind has indeed thirsted for “peace”
throughout the ages. It is a glorious objective, and a
central and hallowed goal in the Jewish Religion.
Realistically, it has never been achieved for any
sustained period of time throughout history.  The old-
new Arab twist, to use Israel’s thirst for “peace” as a
tool to destroy Israel, is a device which Arafat tells
us he learned well from Mohammed himself.  The use of
“Peace” to “destroy” is not new, but isn’t it surprising
that such a goodly number of our ancient people are
being taken in by the insincere bait of peace, falsely
promised to them by our Arab brethren.
