Friday at Oz veGaon with Yisrael Harel

This coming Friday at 9:00 in the morning at Oz veGaon, we will host Yisrael Harel, who will speak on the Jewish Nationhood bill.

Yisrael Harel is a journalist and an activist for the Israeli public, was head of the Institute for Zionist Strategies during the years 2005 – 2012. Yisrael Harel was one of the participants in the Pesach Seder of 1968 at the Park Hotel  in Hevron, which was the founding event of the Jewish community in Hevron and Kiryat Arba.

With his enlistment to the IDF, he volunteered for the paratroopers. With the paratroopers, Harel took a training course as a fighter and afterward,  the infantry commander’s course. In the Yom Kippur War, in October 1973, he fought as a reservist in the Paratroopers Brigade under the command of Danny Matt; they fought in the Egyptian sector and were the first to cross the Suez Canal during Operation Stouthearted Men.

In 1980 he founded the newspaper Nekuda and was its editor for 15 years. That same year he was among the founders of the Council of Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza and served as its first head, continuing until 1995.

Harel’s opinion pieces are published in the editorial page of Haaretz. He has published articles on various subjects in the New York Times, the Guardian and other newspapers.

Harel serves as head of the NGO of the Paratrooper Liberators of Jerusalem, and  has also written two books dealing with the Paratroopers Brigade during the Six Day War.

In 2005, together with Yoel Golovinski, he established the Institute for Zionist Strategies and headed it until 2012, when he was replaced by Yoaz Hendel.

In April 2015 he won the Moskowitz Prize for Zionism. He resides in Ofra.
