Dear Friends,
Somehow Barack Obama, as a candidate to be the President of the United States, frightens me.
Barack Obama is no doubt an effective speaker. "We want change," he always passionately intones; he does not actually tell us what change he wants, but his delivery is certainly very skillful. Who does not want some things changed in their lives?
His audience always responds as if mesmerized: "WE WANT CHANGE!"
In the beginning I felt that Obama just spoke in platitudes, that he did not really have any kind of platform. Now that he has made his platform public, I start to believe that "President" Obama might be dangerous, both for America and for Israel.
Obama has very ambitious plans as to how to solve the world’s problems. He promises that the thrust of his foreign policy will be personal presidential engagement with tyrannical regimes across the globe, including Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in Iran.
On Obama’s website-Barackobama.com- the following sentence appears:
"Obama is the only major candidate who supports tough, direct, presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions."
Let us consider for a moment the possible consequences of such a summit meeting between "President" Obama and President Ahmedinejad without any preconditions whatsoever! Would not American "President" Obama be giving legitimacy to Iranian President Ahmedinejad, who, besides being a Holocaust denier, is fanatic in his hatred of Jews and Israel?
Some of the ugly statements Ahmedinejad has made about Israel:
"Israel must be wiped off the map."
"Israel is ‘filthy’ bacteria."
"The State of Israel is a rotten and stinking corpse."
"Israel has reached the end like a dead rat."
Obama, who while on the campaign trail has declared that "nobody has spoken out more fiercely on the issue of anti-Semitism than I have," would give the honor of a Presidential meeting to the most dangerous anti-Semite of all?
Unfortunately, there is no doubt that Obama is vulnerable on national security issues because of his inexperience. Three years as the senator for the State of Illinois has hardly prepared him to be in charge of national security for the entire country. Such a job might better be entrusted to someone with Senator McCain’s experience, background, and maturity.
Obama’s apparent willingness to agree to such an important summit without preconditions proves without a doubt that he is not as yet ready to be in charge of US national security.
Having made Iranian talks without precondition his major foreign policy goal, Obama would be left with little leverage to extract concessions, and little choice to move forward.
When a summit meeting occurs, there is considerable pressure to "accomplish" something, to come to an agreement. What exactly would a President Obama be willing to give to Iran in order to get back something that could be touted as an achievement of his summitry?
With Blessings and Love for Israel,
Ruth Matar
