Letter from Ruth Matar (Women in Green) Jerusalem
Thursday, January 24, 2008
Dear Friends,
I have come across some interesting Letters to the Editor in the recent Israeli Press.
The following is a Letter to the Editor of the JERUSALEM POST, dated January 23, 2008.
“One utterance by Tzipi Livni summed up the demented state of affairs in our leadership today. [R.M.: include in this demented state of affairs in our leadership Israel’s foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni herself!] Speaking on the situation in Gaza, our Foreign Minister said that the Jewish state ‘is the only place in the world that supplies electricity to terrorist organizations that launch rockets at it in return.’
“By making this statement, Livni admitted that the Israeli Government has been an essential partner in launching the more than 6,000 rockets that have landed on Sderot and the western Negev in the past 7 years. Our government’s moral standards are clearly skewed, since providing electricity for a hostile enemy population takes precedence over saving Jewish lives.
“As someone who travels to Sderot regularly, and has witnessed first hand the terrible suffering there, I can say with confidence that it is time for a new Israeli leadership to arise, one that, first and foremost, will take the necessary measures to protect its citizens.”
Josh Hasten.

The following Letters to the Editor appeared in the January 2008 issue of the VOICES Magazine.
1. “NAOMI HARLOW concurs that Bush should have visited Sderot and met its residents. She’d also have sent him to the caravillas of Gush Katif-expellees, and the homes in the North destroyed by Katyushas. Naomi would have liked if Bush met with ‘activists’ arrested for distributing ‘seditious’ material, i.e., Arlene Kushner’s investigative report on the real face of Fatah.”
2. “DEVORAH WEISBLATT would have sent Bush to Sderot as well. In addition, Devorah feels he should have gone to an Israeli gan [preschool], or elementary school, and a ‘Palestinian’ gan or elementary school, so that he could compare/contrast what the kids learn in the two places.
“Devorah also wanted George to visit any Machsom (checkpoint) or army base in the country, and meet some of our precious kids who are defending us 24/7/365 against those who would like to destroy us!”
The following, also from VOICES, I find both timely and humorous:
3. “MIMI FULD said that Bush would have gotten a totally different view of Israel and our connection to our land, had he been ‘locked in a room with Nadia Matar (and a chaperone, of course) for an hour- that’d do it!’ We agree.”
